XAN PADRON

The New York borough of Brooklyn and Vienna‘s Leopoldstadt have been officially twinned in a borough partnership since 2007. However, very few people know that. We think that‘s a shame. Because this relationship has great potential.

With the association „NO SLEEP TILL LEOPOLDSTADT“, we want to bring the partnership back into the public eye. As different as Brooklyn and Leopoldstadt may seem at first glance, there are numerous similarities that we want to make visible. We do this by creating space to bring together artists from both boroughs. In this way, we encourage the exchange of people and regions.

In 2024, NO SLEEP TILL LEOPOLDSTADT is collaborating with the artist and photographer Xan Padrón. His multifaceted works invite you to discover them and enliven vacant store fronts in Leopoldstadt.

For his “Time Lapse” series, Xan Padrón places his camera in an unnoticed space. During the space of two hours he photographs a sequence of people passing a unique wall, documenting the ecosystem of cities around the world, finding beauty through pause and through the small, collective gestures of daily life. In this way he creates some sort of sociological portrait of a place. Xan Padrón‘s work is both art and a contemporary document.

In Untere Augartenstraße, Xan Padrón presents a series of works made in Brooklyn and Leopoldstadt. Exhibited side by side, they give the impression of people moving from the borough to the Gemeindebezirk and vice versa. In short, his work is a visual translation of our association‘s purpose: celebrating cultural exchange.
